What are cookies and other tracking technologies?

Cookies are small pieces of data that are stored by your browser on your device or computer when you use a website. They are often used to remember things that a website browser has done in the past, for example logging in to a secure area.  Other tracking technologies that we may use include web beacons. These are electronic images that are embedded on our website, app and emails which allow us to record your actions when you open the page that contains the beacon. They are used to send information such as your IP address, when each email was viewed, from what device and which geo-location. This enables us to track and measure plastic pollution and target reduction incentives more effectively.

How do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?

Like many other website operators, we use cookies on our Planet Patrol mobile app and website (collectively our “Services”) to give you a more personalised browsing experience and improve the way our Services work. For example, cookies enable us to provide content tailored to your interests based on the browsing history from the pages that you visited when you last used our Services.

We may use both session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are deleted when you log off from our app or website and close your browser. Persistent cookies remain on your device for a set period of time specified in the cookie, and they are activated each time that you visit the Services that created that particular cookie.

We use the following types of cookie:

  1. 1. Strictly necessary cookies. These are cookies that are required for the operation of our Services. They include, for example, cookies that enable you to log into secure areas of our app and donate money towards the cost of our clean-up operations.
  1. 2. Analytical/performance cookies. They allow us to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around our app and website when they are using them. This helps us to improve the way our Services work, for example, by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for easily.
  1. 3. Functionality cookies. These are used to recognise you when you return to our Services. This enables us to personalise our content for you, greet you by name and remember your preferences (for example, your username).
  1. 4. Targeting cookies and web beacons. These cookies record your visit to our app or website, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed. We will use this information to make our app and website more relevant to your interests. If you register to receive our newsletter by email, you will receive emails which will contain a web beacon. We use information about email usage to compile reports and to help us improve our communications. Our Services may also collect your IP address which is routinely stored as part of web server log files for [14 days].
