“We cannot delay the treaty any longer. The world needs dramatic improvements to plastic pollution, starting immediately.” Planet Patrol
The fifth round of negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty (INC-5.2) will take place next week in Geneva. Ahead of this, a powerful coalition of UK-based and international civil society organisations, including Planet Patrol, is calling on the UK Government to do all they can to make a strong treaty a reality.

Plastic pollution is a global crisis. With plastic production projected to triple by 2060, the window for decisive, collective action is closing fast. This next round of negotiations may be the last chance to secure an ambitious, legally binding treaty that tackles plastic pollution at its source, not just once it’s become waste.
The UK has a critical role to play.
As one of the largest per capita consumers of plastic in the world, the UK must show real leadership. If the UK government can mobilise support for a strong treaty, it will shape global production, consumption, and pollution trends for decades to come.
The last round of negotiations saw fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists outnumber national delegations, including the EU. We must be prepared for similar tactics again, and stand firm.

“As part of a coalition of 20 environmental and advocacy groups, Planet Patrol is urging the UK Government to stand firm at INC-5.2 and push for a strong deal to tackle plastic pollution. We need a treaty that protects people, wildlife, and the planet, not corporate profits.”
Klara Wertheim, Head of Programmes & Campaigns at Planet Patrol

The UK’s support is vital to unlocking a future free from plastic pollution.
An overreliance on plastic is not only harming people and ecosystems in the UK but also contributing to environmental injustices overseas, as we continue to export both primary plastic and plastic waste. Every day, Planet Patrol volunteers see the impact of single use plastic polluting our waterways in the UK and around the world.
Meanwhile, the rise in plastic incineration is affecting human health outcomes and accelerating climate damage. By firmly aligning with other advocates of an ambitious treaty, the UK can use its global influence to support key nations that may be vulnerable to pressure from vested interests and help drive progress toward a strong and effective global agreement.
